Suggest Treatment For Gallstones In The Elderly

Hello Doctor, My mother is 58 year old. She was having gastric problem for last 4 days. Today we have an ultrasound, which resulted in 1.8cm stone in gall bladder. Also there is swelling in the gall bladder. Doctor advised to wait till the swelling disappears completely. Thereafter he will proceed for surgery. Is it necessary to operate or this can be dilute through medicine?? Should we go for second opinion? Please advise. Thanks and regards,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Gallbladder stones are treated only surgically, there is no other treatment or oral pill that can help "dissolve" them. The moment that they become symptomatic they have to be removed.
Pain killers can be used until the surgery can be arranged.

If there is inflammation around the gallbladder (cholecystitis) then antibiotics should be used for a while till the inflammation is down and then surgery can be planned.

I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you. Let me know if I may assist you further.

Regards,
