Suggest Treatment For Gangrene In An Elderly Person
Hi, My 85 year old Mother in law has sclerosis of her leg arteries which has resulted in gangrene She was considered for bypass but was found not to be a suitable candidate Basically she is fairly healthy, a bit confused sometimes but does not have dementia. She has refused amputation and I am very concerned about what will happen Will she be in a lot of pain as the gangrene progresses, she doesnt tolerate Tramadol or Morphine, becoming very confused and agitated. Also she has it in her mind that it will be a quick painless death, I m not so sure Thanks Wendy from Auckland
General & Family Physician, Dr. Deepak 's Response
Hi..... Thank you for your post. I have read your description, and i understand your concern. Gangrene is nothing but dead tissue. Amputating the Gangrenous limb is the only method to provide relief to patent. There is no way to bring dead tissue back to life. If ignored she will be in a lot of pain. As she is not a suitable candidate for bypass, unfortunately it leaves only Amputation as mode a treatment. This can prevent further worsening of patients symptoms. Hope i have answered your query. Bye.
