Suggest Treatment For Headache, Neck And Shoulder Pain
I have been having serious neck/shoulder pain for the past two weeks. It s been getting significantly worse and I plan to see a doctor, I believe it s probably my rotator cuff. However, last night the pain was so severe, I ended-up with such a severe headache that I thought I was going to vomit. I took some ibuprofen and the pain in neck, shoulder and head eventually went away. Today, I m sitting at my office and I was scratching my head and I noticed a pretty large lump(about the size of a quarter) on the top left side of my head, about two inches above my ear. I haven t hit my head at all and the lump certainly wasn t there this morning when I was washing my hair. I am now wondering if the headache I had last night wasn t related to my neck/shoulder issue but maybe related to this lump that just appeared out of nowhere??? I am 49 years old and typically very healthy. I plan to see doctor as soon as possible for the neck/shoulder pain but should I go to the emergency room for this mysterious lump? I am a bit nervous now. Thank you.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have headache, neck and shoulder pain . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like muscle spasm , nerve compression or heart problem like angina . Sometimes occipital neuralgia can also cause such symptoms . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination and treatment . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI along with nerve conduction test and physical examination to confirm the diagnosis . Doctor may prescribe muscle relaxant , anti inflammatory , nerve supplement along with physical therapy . For now stay calm , take ibuprofen , apply warm compresses to shoulder and arm , do light stretching exercises under expert or acetaminophen for pain and take proper rest.
It is understandable to be concerned. The lump may be an occipital lymph node responding to inflammation or trauma in the area.
Lymph nodes are located in different points of the body and they enlarge if there is any evidence of inflammation in the area that they are responsible for.
It would be best, as you mentioned, to see your doctor for an assessment to determine the cause of the pain and pin point the reason for the enlarged node, if this is confirmed.
I hope this helps
