Suggest Treatment For Headaches And Tiredness

I m a Medieval Combat Re-enactor and this time last year is was in an accident where a large number of people in armour fell on me. I fell badly and hit the back of my neck at the base of the spine with the edge of my helmet. I was treated at the scene by paramedics and considered to be okay. Howver, a few days later I was feeling unwell and so went to A&E. I was scanned and they noted a swelling at the point of impact and borderline for an operation. I was sent home with pain relief. I have have since seen an osteopath (6 visits) which has cleared me of many of the problems regarding pain. However, it has been noticed that I have since been having mood swings which include unreasonable anger (not violent) for minor reasons. I have also had headaches that are unusual for me in that they are either a pressure like pain, sheet like upon the top of the brain or through the brain, or a stabbing sensation on the left side to centre. I have also notice actute tiredness after even a restful period.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about having an accident wherein people fell on you and your helmet causing injury over lower neck, scanned, visits to Osteopath and so on; now developed headache, irritation.
Since you have not mentioned which scan was performed I would advise you the following in such a situation:
MRI of the whole spine as there could have been any injury unnoticed or asymptomatic at that particular spot.
MRI of brain as you have developed mood swings and headache which may be related to your accident.
All the further management will depend upon the findings and clinical evaluation by a Neurosurgeon.
Also watch for factors in family and work, blood pressure changes, electrolyte imbalance which can cause such symptoms.
You can take a second opinion of an Orthopedic Surgeon.
Also go for all relevant blood tests.
Spinal fluid aspiration and tests may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
