Suggest Treatment For Heart Palpitations, Lack Of Concentration, Anti-social Behavior And Depression After Shifting Into A Hostel

Hi sir. I just joined a medical college 2 months back. I had to move to a hostel for the first time in my life. I m having a adjustment problem here. I am not able to concentrate on anything. My heart keeps palpating all the time. I feel sad and depressed and also anti social. I guess I need help because I m afraid of failing in anything in life. I guess like other doctors are calling it, it is adjustment syndrome.

Hello,

Please try and stay relaxed. Early in the morning do your regular routine, take care of your hygiene, listen to calming music for 10 -15 minutes. Take water and fluids that you should have in the hostel. Study for some time and talk to your batchmates. Some may be quiet like you, prefer to become friends with them. You have just joined hostel, so don't worry. Over time you will adjust.

Since your heart is palpating you should get back home for some time and get clinically examined by a GP, get required tests and investigations done to detect any pathology that is causing you symptoms. If yes, then you will be accordingly treated. You can share the problem that you are facing at home with someone whom you think will understand your problem. Talk therapy and group discussion along with CBC, cognitive behavior therapy works wonders.

You can get connected to a Psychotherapist / Councilor and a physiotherapist. Try to stay active and music is very healing. To help better concentration, do away with multi-tasking. Reduce distractions, connect with nature, get more sleep and take food in time. Follow healthy lifestyle. If possible, you can take a room and stay as a paying guest if you are very uncomfortable in the hostel. When you get comfortable you can get back to the hostel.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
