Suggest Treatment For Hemorrhoids

I have been using Proctosol-HC 2.5% for hemorrhoids. I have been using it for months. Just discovered that it can cause skin thinning. I have been having trouble with red and purple hemorrhoids. I went to local doctor specializing in this area. He banded an internal hemorrhoid, but said that he does not advise to do anything to surface ones... I am worried that I may have be causing more damage with excess use of the topical medication...

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
Understand your concern
Protoscol-HC contain steroid and lead to thinning of skin on prolonged use so avoid excessive use. (Should not be used for more than 14 days)
As a treating I give following advice to treat hemmrohoids
foods rich in dietary fiber, intake of more oral fluids to maintain hydration
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: Tablet brufen/paracetamol for pain and to reduce inflamamtion, Avoid straining to pass stools, as this may make your haemorrhoids worse

after passing a stool, use moist toilet paper or baby wipes to clean your bottom, rather than dry toilet paper pat the area around your bottom, rather than rubbing it,
Warm (but not hot) sitz baths a: sit in about 8 cm of warm water for 15 minutes, several times a day, especially after a bowel movement.
petroleum jelly or zinc oxide, an analgesic agent such as lidocaine, and a vasoconstrictor such as epinephrine can be used

If symptoms persist, your doctor may suggest one of the following procedures. Many can be performed as a day-case:
- Injection or sclerotherapy.
- Coagulation or cauterisation, Banding.
- Surgery: Doppler-guided, transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization and stapled hemorrhoidopex

Hope this may help you.
Best regards
Dr. Sagar
