Suggest Treatment For High BP After Starting Valsartan

Last week I had a A-Fib Ablation surgery, my doctor took me off Metoprolol and Multaq. In a few days my blood pressure was running high. My medical doctor on Tuesday of this week doubled the Valsartan to 320mg to get my blood pressure under control. It is now Friday and the blood pressure is still running on the top number 150, 160, to 170. What do you suggest we should do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are now at the maximum dose of the Valsartan, and still have high blood pressures, so I would suggest starting another blood pressure medication. Since you should no longer have a-fib, there are better medications for blood pressure than Metoprolol, and I would suggest starting a medication like chlorthalidone or amlodipine as a second-line medication for your hypertension. I would let your doctor know about your elevated blood pressures and talk with them about what they would like to do in order to better control it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
