Suggest Treatment For High BP And Diabetes

Hi, My Father in law was recently admitted to a hospital in bangalore with a chief complaint of sweating, vomiting & dizziness. He was subjected to a batter of tests and his cardiac system was declared normal. The only problem was with his blood sugar which at the time of admission they found was 291. over a period of 24 hours it stayed around 200 after giving insulin. however his glycosylated hemoglobin test came out normal. he was asked to take glycomet twice daily. 1 week down, RBS & PPBS was repeated. RBS was in normal range & PPBS was slightly high. however the doctor increased the dose of glycomet to thrice a day. and he has also been prescribed Vertin, Clopilet, Atorva and Prolomet. I understand prolomet is for hypertension. His BP is borderline high. He is not convinced about increasing his dosage. As a result of this, we want a second opinion. what do u suggest?

Hello there,
I can understand that you are not convinced with the dose of Glycomet being increased but that seems to be the right way to go for your Father in Law. It is evident that your father has diabetes as inspite of medications it has been on a higher side. Glycomet contains a medicine called Metformin and it is one of the most studied molecule in diabetes and found to be very effective. Now you have not mentioned the dose that was prescribed but the ideal dose of Metformin is somewhere 1000 mg to 2000 mg per day in divided doses if required. As the patients blood sugar was still high for the PPBS value it warrants increase in Metformin dose. Just make sure that his renal functions are good and discuss with your diabetologist about the increase in dose. I am sure your doctor will be able to put your worries at rest.
Continue to follow diet and exercise as per advice and also do not discontinue any medicine without prior consultation with the doctor.Take care.
