Suggest Treatment For High BP In An Elderly Person

Hi I am concerned about my grandmother. She s 82 years and is diabetic as well and has high blood pressure. Her kidneys are functioning at only 28%. This is all treated with medication but my concern is that my grandmother has lost a significant amount of weight and hasn t been able to get around very well so she s unable to exercise. She complained about a growth near her vaginal area and went to her PCP to get it looked at but her doctor didn t think that what she felt was anything serious but I have a feeling that she might have cancer. I wouldn t have thought of it had she not lost so much weight in a short period of time. What kind of tests should she be doing to see if cancer is a possibility? I need your assistance please.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I appreciate your concern for your beloved grandma.

As per the history given she appears to be taking the treatment for her high BP and kidney failure. Apparently a significant weight loss is indicative of some chronic infection like tuberculosis or certain genital cancers such as carcinoma of the uterus, etc.

Regarding the suspected growth near her vagina, she needs to be examined by a gynecologist and a biopsy to be taken to detect any cancerous growth depending upon the clinical examination.

She may also need other tests such as CT scan or MRI scan for the diagnosis of any suspected cancer.

Hope this answers your query.
