Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my 49 year old boyfriend, just told me a routine screening by a nurse at work showed his BP is 180/120 and a pulse of 46. I say go to the ER, or at least his primary care doc, and get it checked in a half hour or so if he won't and this is a fluke. Thoughts?
Hi! I read carefully your query. The normal range for blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg and any number over this is considered high and need treatment. Untreated hypertension can lead to serious complications such as stroke, heart attack, kidney damage, retinal damage etc.
It is vary important for his health to get in touch with a cardiologist in order to get the right treatment and to monitor his blood pressure. If this was the first time that his blood pressure was high I would suggest to monitor closely his blood pressure by measuring it twice daily every day for 10 days and note this results. If his blood pressure is high in most of readings he should start a treatment.
He should make some lifestyle changing to help reducing his blood pressure such as :exercise ,quit smoking, eat a nutritious diet that is low in fat and salt.
Hope I was able to help you. Take care. Dr.Rovena
