Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Treatment For High Cholesterol, Throat Infection And Low Immunity
I have the following symptoms - High Cholesterol, intermittent pain in the knees, low immunity leading to throat infection 3-4 times a year and certainly when in contact with an infected person, a feeling of tiredness by end of the day, even a 40 min walk exhausts me, low sexual libido, if in the event of impact to a bone- the pain lasts for weeks and restless sleep. I find myself in a vicious circle. I was asked by my physician to perform a Vitamin D3 check 25 Hydroxy(OH) Vit D test which yielded a value of 12.4. The Vitamin B-12 levels were observed as 669. Reading on the internet i felt my symptoms are matched with the D3 deficeincy. I would like your advise as well as an advise to whether the condition of bone deterioration ( if any) is reversible. I am a 45 years old male.
You have not mentioned unit in Vitamin D report (normal is >20 ng/mL or ≥50 nmol/L). Vitamin D deficiency can cause general weakness, bone pains and low immunity. This is treated with a combination of vitamin D and calcium. Bone changes are reversible, except in are cases(in some non-nutritional causes). Take a diet rich calcium and vitamin D (milk, cheese, yogurt, fish, liver or fortified items). Do regular exercise for better assimilation of calcium in bone. Sunlight exposure also is good.
High cholesterol needs diet and life style modification - regular physical exercise, diet low in oils/fat (especially animal fat) and high in fibre- and occasional drug treatment, depending on cholesterol level. For patients with recurring pharyngitis, I used to give 10 days penicillin therapy to eradicated streptococcal carriage state. Your doctor will guide you.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
