I was diognoised with hyperthyroidism (thyroid storm) 8 years ago. I was treated with medication for two years. At that point I went off the meds and was free of symptoms for six years. I recently developed a sinus infection, which prompted the symptoms of hyperthyroidism to return, which are hand tremors, leg muscle weakness, breathlessness, fatigue, irregular bowel movements.
There are a couple of possibilities in your case. Since you have already been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism once (8 years back), it is likely that your symptoms are related to that. Alternatively, since your symptoms have appeared following an infection in the sinuses, it is possible that you have thyroiditis. The blood work up and symptoms for both these conditions are similar. Only a nuclear thyroid scan can differentiate the causes. If you have thyrotoxicosis (as before) it is advisable to go for anti-thyroid medication followed by radioactive iodine therapy (if age permits). If it is thyroiditis, then supportive treatment with beta blockers with be suffecient. No anti-thyroid medication is required. Hope the answer helped.
