Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello Dr I have a very small incisional hernia so I want to know whether I can do my light bending exercises for benefit of stomach muscle and whether I can do deep breathing exercises by holding breath for a few seconds & then releasing? I do these now so kindly advise. Regards MB
Incisional hernia arise because of the opening in the muscle and also due to increase in the pressure inside the abdomen.
Certain exercises increase the intra-abdominal pressure, thus increasing the hernia. Bending exercises, however light do cause some degree of increase in intra-abdominal pressure. I suggest you avoid these exercises. You may also consider wearing an abdominal support belt whenever lifting weights.
Walking is a great form of exercise, which makes use of almost all the muscles in the body. You can take to walking if your are interested in becoming fitter.
If the incisional hernia is too large, refuses to go back on lying down position or gives rise to stomach pain especially on having food, you need a surgical opinion as the hernia may be developing complications.
Hope this helps. Wishing you good health.
Regards, Dr Geeta
