Suggest Treatment For Insomnia

My husband has been having problems sleeping if he eats after 6:00 PM. He has to prop himself up in bed because it seems the food wants to back up in his throat. This has been going on for a year or more. A few days ago he had that problem all day long. He had to keep trying to clear his throat because it felt like nothing will digest. Yesterday I made him some popcorn and for the first time it came out of his nose. I am trying to get him to see a doctor what he refuses. What can you tell me about this or recommend for him to do?

Hi Dear ,

As per your query your husband is unable to sleep after eat , he also has to clear his throat and has cough . Well there caan be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query , but in your case it seems to me that the symptoms are due to acid reflux disease , because due to acid reflux content of stomach come upward and cause discomfort .You should consult a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated and even if required he/she can advise you to get Endoscopy done . For acid reflux doctor may advise to take Proton pump inhibitor like Pantoprazole or Omeprazole . Antacid like Milk of Magnesia can also be advised . Sometimes doctor may also recommend surgery to correct the defect of esophageal sphincter . I would suggest you to :-
- Eat more of Probiotics like Yoghurt.
- Drink plenty of water as it helps in dilution of acid.
- Avoid spicy and acidic foods and heavy and large meals.
- Take small and light meals.
- Eat atleast 1 hours before meals.
- Take short walk after meals.
- Sleep with head slightly raised as compared to legs.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
