Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve been taking Azelastine HCl Nasal Solution 2 sprays ea. side nightly for 8 years. I stopped taking it 5 months and haven t slept through the night since. I wake up after 3-4 hrs. of sleep and am then awake for another 1-2 hrs. before falling back to sleep every night now. I have always slept through the night until now. My primary dr. has me taking 5 mg of melatonine before bed but it doesn t help my sleeping through the night at all. I fall asleep easily after reading for 15 mins, and I don t have to get up to use the bathroom. So sleep deprived----any advice is welcomed. I thank you. I am a 63 y/o male in excellent condition and only 75 mg. of zantac before breakfast and dinner.
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related doubts
I can understand your concern. Azelastine HCL is an antihistaminic drug and the drug is known to cause sedation, somnolence etc side effects. You have used nasal solution for years and then stopped. The lack of sleep could be withdrawal of the drug, but with nasal drops the chances are very less likely. The insomnia could be due to some other cause but triggered by drug withdrawal.
If Melatonin is not working then other sedative hypnotic drugs can be used. Zolpidem or Zopiclone in low doses can help in sleep onset and you will feel better. Other drugs like low dose benzodiazepines can also be used. Clonazepam is long acting and can help to maintain good sleep. Please consult with your psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.
Thanks, Take care
