Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 16 and I have had my period for about 2 and a half years now and my periods are still irregular. Sometimes I go a few months without even getting it. Is this because I am still undergoing puberty? I am too afraid to go to my doctor. I want to start birth control too, and I hope that would help regulate my periods?
Hello, I can understand your problem and these kind of problems occur in many girls or pubertal age. So i want to assure that its absolutely normal and you do not have to worry much about it, because hormonal changes are taking place in pubertal age and it can lead to irregular menses. And in most of the cases, periods will become regular after 2 to 3 years or attaining age of 18. As you are only 16, so my advise to you is to wait for one year or so and by that time your menses will become regular, but if the problem continues to remain same after one year or so, then you can take OC pills to get it regular, but always take pills after consulting any gynecologist. So overall, you just be relaxed and safely wait for some time to get it regular and then only think about taking pills after consulting a gynecologist. Feel free to ask any questions directly to me anytime.
