Hello and welcome,

It is highly likely you are suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). In PCOS ovaries cannot produce progesterone and produce large amounts of estrogens. Also women with have high level of testosterone – a male hormones that cause excessive hair grow, acne, deepening of the voice etc. Menstrual cycle irregularities and abnormal menstrual bleeding are also main signs of PCOS. Your doctor confirms the diagnosis by obtaining follicle stimulation hormone, leutinising hormone levels and their ratio.
PCOS treatment is complex and includes both life style changes (exercise, weight loss) and medications. Exercise and weight loss can restore your ovulation, normalize menstrual cycles and reduce the risk of diabetes. It also helps to reduce the symptoms of excessive hair growth and acne.
Medical treatment consists of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), metformin and anti-androgen medications. OCPs make menstrual periods more regular, and metformin helps with weight loss and lower cholesterol levels in the body. Both of the medications help to reduce hair growth, clear acne by reducing the level of androgens. Anti-androgen medications main action is to decrease androgen production or block the action of androgens on the hair follicle. Spironolactone in most commonly used. But you doctor may also prescribe cyproterone acetate, flutamide or finasteride. Excessive body hair treatment requires at least 6 month of treatment to decrease body hair.

I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
