Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have recently been in the hospital for a few days and gone through several tests (blood work,CT Scan,Colonoscopy. The doctor said that I hadI Ischemic Colitis. Had blood coming from my anus after a bought of severe cramps followed by diarhia and then blood kept coming out when I felt like having a bowel movement. This continued for a couple of days while in hospital. I was informed that my colon twisted and that is why I had such severe cramps. I have now been home from hospital for 3 days and eating properly (lots of greens, hope made chicken soup, oatmeal, lots of water). Still no bowel movement but I have a green slimy discharge. Not sure what to make of this. I am 71 years old and have had a history of constipation that seems to run in my family. The doctor gave me Lax A Day and some Taro-Docusate to help with the constipation. I am worried that I have not had a bowel movement yet (taking both Decussate and the Lax A Day every day since I have been home. I am passing some gas but nothing else except the green slime mucus. Also have been excersizing (treadmill and Yoga stretches) Should I be worried about this?
Hello, Welcome to HCM. First of all thank you for sharing your concern with us . Ischemic colitis is commonly seen above 60 years of age and it shows that there is not enough blood circulation to the colon which is necessary for maintaining the function of colon . In your case Ischemic colitis is a result of twisting of intestine known as bowel strangulation which compromises the blood supply to Intestines . It looks like that you noticed it early and took proper treatment . Most of the mild cases of ischemic colitis resolves on its own . Antibiotics , liquid food diet , pain medicine if needed , are the basic modality of treatment in mild cases of IC and most of the patients responds well . I recommend you exercise regularly and eat a healthy liquid diet , drink plenty of water and it would be enough to make your GIT work again . If the condition persists worsens more then consult your gastroenterologist for proper evaluation . I wish you good health . Best Regards, Dr.S.Tomar
