Suggest Treatment For Itchy Rash In A Patient With Renal Aneurysm

My 83 year old sister was hosp[talized for Renal anuerisym and blood clots, later transferred to assisted nursing. She was transferred a 2nd time to facility closer to her daughter. Some place along the line she has picked up an itchy skin rash on her back only. They are having difficulty treating it. She lives in Calif. and I am in Ohio, therefore I haven t seen what it looks like. I recall when our mother was in her early 70 s and in a nursing facility she picked up a skin rash that itched only on her back. The doctor immediately isolated her and treated her for a staph infection which finally cleared up. Is this a possibility?

Hello,

The following are few probable causes of your sister's itchy rash:
1) Eczema
2) Allergic contact dermatitis
3) Urticaria
4) Psoriasis
5) Various infections like fungal infection tenia corporis
6) Chicken pox, measles
7) Heat rash
8) Insect bites

Treatment depends upon the cause of your rash. The following are few treatment options:
1) Allergy medications: Oral antihistamines, a type of allergy medication, reduce itching
2) Anti-inflammatory creams: Hydrocortisone creams like Cortisone soothe inflammation and itching.
3) Immunosuppressants: If the skin rash is from eczema or an immune system response, medicines can reduce the reaction. Calming it can minimize inflammation (irritation).
4) Oatmeal baths: Soaking in a warm bath with colloidal oatmeal can relieve dry, itchy skin rashes.
5)Steroids: If symptoms persist, your healthcare provider may prescribe a topical steroid cream or an oral steroid like prednisone. Steroids ease inflammation and itchiness.
6) Topical immunomodulators: These medications change (modulate) your body’s immune system response to allergens.

Prescription medications include tacrolimus ointment (Protopicr) and pimecrolimus skin cream (Elidelr). Please do consult your dermatologist for prescription medications.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

General & Family Physician Dr. Vasudha's  Response
Hi,

Renal aneurysm with staph infection can hamper renal functions and cause renal failure, itchy skin is one of sign of such condition. So antibiotic cleared infection, re-treating renal failure and itching is possible. You should complete the antibiotic course and be under regular check of the treating urologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
