Suggest Treatment For Itchy Rash On Body

Hi - My mom has been batteling this skin rash for the last 18 months, she has tried everything and just can t seem to get rid of it. She s been to numerous doctors including 3 dermatologist, and infectious disease doctor and her family doctor. She believes she has scabies and has gone through the treatment for this several times, but nothing has worked. Her rash is from head to toe and consists of open wounds. She s been told that it s all in her head, but I ve seen first hand something bites her and blood comes out and there is a red mark. Wondering if you can offer any suggestions... Signed, Desperate!!! :(

Hello,

Your mother is suffering from itchy rashes from head to toe. She has been to dermatologists but its not working and she is getting the rashes repeatedly. It is all over from head to toe. Your mother is advised to take care of her hygiene, take bath regularly with antibacterial soap and get all her clothes washed in hot water.

She should not share her toiletries or clothes with anyone and clean up her room thoroughly and put all the bedding and mattress in sunlight. She should apply ointment hydrocortisone on the areas affected to reduce the itching. She should take antihistamine, once daily at bed time for 5-7 days. It will give her relieve.

She should not touch scratch or pick the wounds, She should be careful of what she is eating, she should avoid taking food that triggers rashes and thus discomfort. Since the rashes are chronic she should get STD tests done. If positive, she will be treated with antibiotics and antivirals.

Neglect will cause worsening of symptoms. She should wash her hair with Selsun shampoo and keep her scalp oiled with antibacterial oil like Neem oil. It will be good to keep the hair as short as possible. She should stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
