Suggest Treatment For Itchy Skin On The Back

The upper part of my wife s back itches most of the time. A Dermatologist has said it is caused by dead nerve endings. We have tried a number of anti-itch medications (creams and lotions) and other than Lanacane, nothing seems to work. And it only works for a short while. Some lotions have actually caused a rash to break out, which she didn t have before. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If it is related to nerve disease then you would need treatment directed towards the nerves.

There are medications that treat nerve-related symptoms eg amitriptyline, Tegretol, lyrica, gabapentin, etc

It may be best for her to see a neurologist for assessment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
