Suggest Treatment For Itchy Throat And Severe Cough

I have had an itchy throat for about 5 weeks. First 2 weeks included wheezing, was given an antibiotic for 7 days which seemed to help a bit. Now itchiness is more severe but cough is less frequent. Tightness in center of chest. I can breathe easier but not exactly. It is very hard to explain. For lack of better words breathing is a bit easier but itchiness is constant does not go away at all. Phlegm is often more clear, sometimes yellow? It s been 5 weeks. What can I do to make this go away? I am miserable. Please help. Ps. I quit smoking 1 month ago. Does this have anything to do with it? How long will this last?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your cough seems to be allergic in nature. This allergy can be that of smoke of cigarette. Chronic smoking can produce allergic bronchitis which can persist even after quitting smoking for the blood changes (eosinophilia) can be retained till treated by specific medication. Get your CBC done. It will clear the possibility of eosinophilia. It needs to be treated by specific medicines. Consult your physician.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
