Suggest Treatment For Jaundice For A Newly-born

Our newborn son is 4 days old today. He was born Wednesday and discharged Friday, with the hospital saying he was borderline between low risk and low intermediate risk for elevated bilirubin. Our own pediatrician can t see him till Tuesday because of the holiday, so they said to make our appointment, it should likely be fine, but to watch the baby this weekend for signs of worsening, and if it looked worse to take him into an emergency clinic to be checked. Two days later, he still clearly has some jaundice, as the whites of his eyes have a yellow tinge, as does his skin. But it doesn t look extreme or significantly progressed. And although his feedings are sporadically spat back up, lots are being kept down, his diapers are regular and progressing as they should, his sleep patterns are normal, and he seems great. In your opinion, should we still be concerned enough about this to take him to an emergency room, or does it seem reasonable to wait until his scheduled appointment in two days?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

By what you explain, your child is feeding well and acting normally and there is no worsening of jaundice so I would say it is safe to wait for the scheduled appointment in two days.
There seems to be no reason to send him to the emergency services.

Jaundice in a newborn may last from 2 weeks to a couple of months, depending on the cause, so there is nothing to worry as long as you follow the recommendations of your doctor and the child seems well.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
