Suggest Treatment For Jock Itch

I think I have what men commonly call the jock itch. Have used perioxide, rubbing alcohol, and tea tree oil to remedy the problem and to stop the itch. No success to date! Don t see any signs of vermin or small critters on my testicles where the itching is located. Thanks for your recommendation. John H

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi John,

Jock itch is usually caused by a fungal infection due to the moist and warm nature of the groin area. The area will appear reddish or darker than surrounding skin, and have a clear border around it. Sometimes you can see that the borders are raised with bumps, which is why the rash is sometimes described as ringworm.

It can be treated with antifungal creams like miconazole or fluconazole, to be applied twice a day for at least two weeks. Make sure you do the cream for long enough to stop it from coming back. Keep the groin area dry and airy by wearing undergarments made of cotton and avoiding tight-fitting pants. Change your clothes after a workout to avoid keeping sweat in contact with your skin for too long.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have further questions.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
