Hi - I m a 49 year old male that recently had a left side kidney stone attack about six weeks ago. When they did the CT on me they also found another stone in my right side but it was determined to be non obstructive. I drank more water throughout the following weeks to flush out the left side kidney stone. During the first week after the stone attack, the ER doctors also prescribed flowmax to me. I took the entire prescription as directed. I never felt the stone exit my urethra. About two weeks after the attack I went to my GP and he did kidney function tests and also did an ultrasound. They couldn t find the stone on the left side and the test results all came back perfect. The only item to note was that my prostate was enlarged but my doctor said that since I was urinating normally it was not an issue (we did a PSA test just to make sure and it was .77 - as an FYI - eight months earlier during my annual check up it was .88). Now fast forward to about four and a half weeks after the initial attack, I woke up unable to urinate, burning sensation when peeing, difficuty peeing when I actually urinated and a general overall non urge of urnation. I didn t know what it was so I drank more water. Long story short, the amount of water intake didn t translate to what I knew of my urination levels and patterns. I went to the ER and they said it was the kidney stone causing this issue. They did kidney function tests and all was good. There were also no UTI present. My issue was that I couldn t drink water in large amounts without getting a burning feeling around my kidneys and my back. I went to the ER four times in total - and they told me I was imagining new issues for myself. Then finally, during my last visit, one doctor in the ER listened to what I was saying - being -that unless I was sipping small amounts of water throughout the day, I would get these dull aches in both sides (rear flanks) and urination was even more difficult with only small amounts coming out. This one ER doctor who listened to what I was saying did an ultrasound and found evidence of hydronephrosis on both kidneys all the while my bladder was not full - which meant to me the flow was slowed down. I went back the next day for the regular ultrasound and they found just the one stone on the left side in my ureter almost ready to exit. The technician asked me to drink a litre of water half way through the ultrasound and come back in an hour. When I went back, he saw the jet stream from both ureters but commented on the fact that the bladder was not full. He also found no evidence of hydronephrosis on ether side. When my results were finally looked at by an ER doctor he said it was the kidney stone causing this back flow or urine and / or slow urine flow in my bladder. By the time he finally came to see me my back was burning, and my flanks were aching and swollen. I demanded to see a urologist. The urologist appointment was booked and I explained what was going on. He did another CT because the xray couldn t determine if the stone had moved. The CT confirmed I had no stone casuing an obstruction, no tumors or cancer withing my abdominal / pelvic areas ether. I was so frustrated now because I was still having these issues with gulping down large glass of water as I have done all my life. I went to my GP and he ordered more kidney function tests (three of them - the most recent being yesterday) and everything was perfect. He also ordered other blood work and it all came back perfect as well. Basically, I am at a loss at what is going on. If there are no blockages such as stones or tumors - and my kidneys are working perfectly - what is causing this issue? When I drink large amounts of liquid - example a large sized glass - and then this doesn t translate into urination based on my history - plus the swelling around the kidenys - it leads me to believe that something is hampering the urine flow into the bladder. Since my kidney functions are perfect could it be an inflammation within both kidneys? How about my enlarged prostate - could this cause these issues? I am managing by sipping small amounts of liquid but this is not right and needs to be rectified. Is there anything else that could cause this? The CT scans ruled out obstructions such as stones and tumors. Are there any other obstructions that could cause urination issues, lack of flow, swelling around kidneys and no urge to urinate? Please, please help me! My life has been turned upside down and I don t know who to turn to. My GP said that he doesn t know how to treat this because all my tests come back perfect showing no kidney issues and my CT scans show no obstructions of any kind.
