Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Have a kidney stone in left kidney - only symptoms were blood in urine. Six months later intense pain in lower left back over two days and reappearance of blood in urine (that is visible to the eye). Urine sample showed no infection but result was 'borderline'. When asked to clarify was told 'there is no infection but your result is borderline because it wasnt a clear result' ? Have no idea what this means. Would be grateful for a reply. Thanks
Most likely they meant this was not a clear catch urine specimen. If the urine is not collected properly, it can be contaminated and the results are then inconclusive. As far as kidney stones, a urine sample can be supportive evidence for their presence, but is not diagnostic. Blood in the urine can be due to other problems. The only way to be sure it's not a kidney stone is to do an x-ray or IVP (a special dye x-ray for the urinary system). You can also have kidney stones with pain but without having blood in the urine. Do you mean you had a kidney stone in the left kidney that was seen on x-ray but is still present? Sometimes if a stone is not passed, further treatment needs to be done to get it out. Hope this helps.
