I have previously been diagnosed as having runners knee about 3 yrs ago but don t run as much except on soft sand once a wk., and it s been throbbing all day today. I do walk often, walk on an incline at the gym and challenge myself on the eliptical and upright bike too (and do stairs which I shouldn t). But there s nothing I can do except ice it right?
Runner's Knee, or patellofemoral pain syndrome, is a common overuse injury causing pain at the front of the knee, around or behind the kneecap. It is most common in runners but can also affect other active people who do climbing stairs and such activities. The mainstay of the treatment is not to more strain on an already strained and inflamed tissues around your knee joint.
First of all consult an orthopedic surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations like MRI of knee joint to rule out any other problem torn ligaments and so on. Take an anti-inflammatory medicines like Ibuprofen if it suits you. Consult a Physiotherapist for any physiotherapy if advocated by an Orthopedic Surgeon and use any knee support as would be advised by your Doctors.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
