Suggest Treatment For Large Purple And Black Bruise After A Fall

I fell and landed full force on top of roller skate wheels and metal plate, I have a large purple and black bruise that is painful to touch and gives slight pain on weightbearing. I have 2 x 2 hour flights and 1 x 9 hour flight in a few days time, will the long haul flight have any effect on my injury?

Hello,

You had a fall full force and thereafter developed a large purple and black bruise. It is painful to touch and there is discomfort on weightbearing. The purple-black bruise is due to formation of blood clots under the skin. You can apply ointment Thrombophob (heparin gel) on the area affected.

Heparin is an anticoagulant and dissolves the blood clot. It also prevents the formation of new blood clots. Slowly the color of the skin should get normal. However, since you are to take a flight, you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get the required blood tests and investigations done so that it gets confirmed that there is no blood clot that can cause complications in the flight.

Long flights can increase the risk of getting a blood clot. This can lead to life threatening complications. Avoid long flights. Avoid crossing the legs while sitting, wear loose non - constricting clothes, avoid taking alcohol or coffee as they cause dehydration. Stay well hydrated. You will be given medicines if required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,

Hi,

No, the long haul flight will not have any effect on your injury or the healing of it. While you do not give the location of your injury, it is highly unlikely.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
