Suggest Treatment For Leaky Aortic Valve In Heart

I have been diagnosed with severe leakage of my aortic valve and my cardiologist says my heart murmur has gotten louder. I have been putting surgery off but he says it should be done soon. What are the risks involved without surgery and expected recovery afterwards. Planning on a biologic valve if repair is not feasible .

Hello,

I too agree with your doctor. Surgery is a must when severe aortic valve leakage. Risks of this intervention include:

- bleeding
- blood clots
- infection
- breathing difficulties

We do fear mostly the infection of the incision site and infection of the new valve. However, antibiotics will be prescribed. Recovery depends on the severity of the intervention.

Usually, 4 to 8 weeks are enough to totally recover. However, the doctor will be there to assist anytime.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
