Suggest Treatment For Leg Injury

my husband just fell on the ice and his lower outer leg is hurting from like 3 inches above the ankle to the ankle. he is concerned it is broken. what should be do? should we run to the er or could it wait til the morning? what signs should be look for to know if it broken?
