Suggest Treatment For Light Spotting

I m 22 years old, I have a son who is 18 months old. I have been on the mirena for 4 months now. I have had light spotting since the beginning but the past couple weeks I have had very heavy spotting along with big blood clots. I have never had blood clots before. is this normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Mirena is a hormone-releasing (levonorgestrel) intrauterine system placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy for as long as for up to 5 years.
For the first 3 to 6 months, the monthly periods may become irregular and the number of bleeding days may increase and spotting days may increase, and also may have frequent spotting or light bleeding.
The reason many women may have lighter periods or stop having periods altogether with Mirena is related to the uterine lining. Once Mirena is removed, your menstrual cycle will return back to normal.
Kindly consult Gynecologist in case these symptoms continue to bother you and does not stabilize by 6 months.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
