Suggest Treatment For Locking And Pain In Knee Post Injury

I injured my knee and had an MRI and X-rays. The first three doctors I went to said I did not have a torn meniscus. They recommended physical therapy. The locking and pain came back again after twisting my knee in a certain direction. This has happened three times now. The fourth orthopedic doctor said I had a tear and needed to have it repaired with surgery. I am doing exercises to strengthen my knee and going to physical therapy. My knee is getting better again but it has been weeks that I have had pain. It seems that soon as the swelling goes down it gets better. Don t know if I should go to a 5th doctor for another opinion, continuing doing my exercises and continue biking or what I should do. I worry about it happening to me again especially if I am traveling.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If a tear is present, it should show up on imaging.

It would not show on the x-ray but would be visible on the MRI. If the MRI was completely fine with no suspicion of a tear, then you should be okay.

If the MRI was not completely clear, it may bear repeating or a repeat assessment may be needed by another orthopedic specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
