Hello,

You have not mentioned if your brother is having any past illness or has some addiction problem. You are suggested to restrict his alcohol intake, drug intake, he should stop smoking (nicotine), restrict caffeine intake. Make sure he is taking home made food in time.

He should keep himself well hydrated with water and fluids. He is advised to get clinically examined by a GP, get blood tests and required imaging tests done to detect underlying disease (depression, schizophrenia, etc.) that is causing him symptoms. Get treated the medical condition, he should get connected to a Physical therapist to manage stress and anxiety that is causing him sleeplessness.

CBT, cognitive behavioral therapy, talk therapy, anti-depressant medication, dietary supplement - valerian may help, triazolam, effectively help to get asleep. Relaxation methods work great, the treating doctor may recommend light therapy if required. He should avoid sleeping or taking naps in the afternoon. He should avoid working continuously on laptop or PC.

His bedroom should be kept clean and comfortable. He should go into bed only when he feels asleep. He is advised to get clinically examined by a psychiatrist to rule out any developing mental disorder. He should stay active and avoid sedentary lifestyle. He should avoid taking large meals and fluids before bedtime (sleeping). He should switch to healthy lifestyle.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
