Suggest Treatment For Metatarsal Inflammation

I ve had a numbness behind my 2nd,3rd,4th toes on left foot for about 1 ½ months. Feels like walking on a ball of cotton on pad of foot. Podiatrist x-rayed and said metatarsal inflammation. Got cortisone shot. Didn t help. Then got some pain/irritation in ball of foot (maybe icing too much?) Going for 2nd opinion. Resting (no running, limited walking, but still swimming), wearing podiatrist/custom made orthotics I have for previous heel spur problem (now resolved). Anxious for immediate relief as I have a hiking trip planned in 3 weeks. Am I on the right course? Missing anything? Thanks in advance!
