Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I ve been on birth control since I was 13 years old, and now I am 20. I have always been a little off since then, a little depressed and expiriences with mild anxiety, I also have done some drugs in the past but not much and only for a couple months, I noticed that had raised my anxiety level a tad. Anyway, I was wondering if coming off of birth control may help with my depression and anxiety? It has been screwing with my relationship and I d really like to know.
Dear user Welcome to HCM We understand your concerns I went through your details. Some studies says that traditional hormonal birth control pills can worsen anxiety and depression because of the effect hormones have on the delicate balance of dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine and GABA, all “feel-good” neurotransmitters in the brain. But these effects are not permanent. Instead of using birth control pills you can ask your partner to use condom. You can also use female condoms.
Anxiety and depression needs to be treated with the help of psychotherapy, counseling, relaxation and therapy and if required medicines. Take care.
