Suggest Treatment For Moderate COPD

I was Diagnosed with moderate COPD, of the Restrictive type. My pulmonologist is a little concerned so he wants to do an chest CT. He stated that my chest x-ray showed old scarring. What wold the old scaring from and should I be scared. I did smoke for 35 yrs but I have been quite for over a year. So I am just wondering what the restrictive type is and the scarring I already do have from my x-ray.
Thank you

Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

COPD (chronic obstructive Pulmonary disease) is a lung condition which is almost exclusively found in smokers. It is a progressive disease and we can not cure the disease completely. We can definitely stop progression by medicines and supportive measures.
COPD is a restrictive kind of lung disease means it restrict your lung expansion which in turn increases your breathing efforts and also results in inadequate oxygenation. Scarring is the anatomical changes that have occurred in your lung due to prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke. We can not revert the scarring by treatment.
I suggest you to consult a pulmonologist and get the following things done:-
1.Smoking cessation, this the most important part of COPD treatment. Avoid peer groups that may tempt you to smoke again.
2.You might require inhaled bronchodiators like salbutamol and ipratropium for long period.
3.Corticosteroid drugs may be needed in case of acute exacerbation of symptoms.
4.Antibiotic therapy may be needed in case of superimposed bacterial infections.
5.Oxygen supplementation and nebulization would provide symptomatic relief.
6.Investigations like spirometry may be needed to assess the severity of the illness.
7.You can go for CT scan to rule out other lung conditions.

You can try the following preventive measures to arrest the progression of the diseases.
1.Quit smoking and avoid second hand smoke.
2.Avoid occupational exposures of chemical fumes and mineral dust.
3.Diagnose and treat respiratory tract infections at earliest.
4.Humidify you room using an indoor humidifier.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
