Suggest Treatment For Mucus In Throat And Cough
hi i have alot of white mucus in my throat when i cough alot and i also have a head cold and i am on some cough tablets from my family doctor but i still cough up the white mucus all the time what should i do now and thank you dr;

The commonest reasons for your symptoms of white mucus in throat and coughing a lot in spite of coughing tablets given by family Doctor can be one of the following:
- Irritation in throat causing excessive mucus production may be due to allergies, local irritants like something in food and beverages that you take, allergens in atmosphere.
- local problems like nasal or sinus problems causing post-nasal drip and accumulation of white mucus in throat.
- Smoking.
- White mucus indicates no infection as you do not have other symptoms like fever, body ache or so.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- First of all, find the reason by close observation and by consulting an ENT Surgeon.
- Investigations like nasal endoscopy, CT scan of sinuses.
- Tests of blood and throat swab.
- Stop the foods and beverages that instigate or enhance the symptoms.
- Antihistamine to reduced reaction.
- Oral steroids if needed.
- Povidone iodine gargles.
