I am fostering a 7 week old who was born opiate addicted. He took his last dose of methadone on wed evening. He has always seemed to have increased nasal stuffiness but for the last couple of days he has been coughing and choking on phlem from secretions, is this a normal part of detox?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the nasal stiffness and phlegm with choking may be of concern with:
- Withdrawal symptoms for opiate
- Lower respiratory tract infection
- Lowered immunity with secondary viral infection

Treatment consists of:
- Evaluation of chest with an X-ray
- Maintenance of oxygen saturation in pulse oximetry
- Continue methadone as per the doc guidelines
- Avoid secondary smoking

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
