Suggest Treatment For Neuropathy Pain In Foot Post Surgery

My diabetic husband is in the hospital with foot surgery. All of a sudden he has terrible neuropathy shooting pains about every 5-10 minutes in the bad foot. He was given two pills to raise his potassium about 6 hours ago plus he had two bananas, since his potassium level was slightly below normal. A short time later, this very bad neuropathy pain started. Could increased potassium cause this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to related to neuropathy. I suggest using anti inflammatory medications such as Acetaminophen to relieve the symptoms. If the symptoms continue, I suggest using prescription painkillers such as Gabapentin. I also recommend using using vitamin B supplement and topical cream for local application. Low blood potassium levels can be related to neuropathy. Thus, I suggest to continue intake of potassium.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
