Suggest Treatment For New Daily Persistent Headache

Three years of having mind-bending pain with NDPH has stripped me of everything. I m trying Namenda now which is supposed to be a treatment drug for Alzeizmers. It s a beta blocker and there s been some hope that this will also reduce NDPH pain. I m on the first low dose and weeks will go by until I ease up to the higher doses. Only then can we make a ruling on how effective the Namenda works. It s been three years on these unending drug trials. Each one is filled with hope. Each one fails. I m loosing my ability to cope with day-to-life. Is thete a legitimate drug trial using psilosybyn+ for primart headache disorders? How do I find those results? How do I find if other trials are needed? If someone has published trial results, whwer?

Hi,

There is no specific treatment for cases of NDPH which is a relatively newly categorized headache type in the international classification of headache diseases III. Nevertheless, I'm impressed that someone chose to place you on Namenda for headaches since this is a rare instance. I would wager that most neurologists are even aware of the use of Namenda for such headaches. Traditionally, Namenda is written to be useful for chronic migraines. NDPH is not a type of migraine headache.

Again, and unfortunately, at this time there does not exist a standard of care medication for this type of headache, therefore, it is to the clinician's discretion as to what could be tried. I am unaware of drug trials in progress at this time using Psilocybin in the treatment of NDPH.

If I were your treating neurologist, I might try you on Petadolex or even a high dose of Melatonin or a titrating dose of Prazosin which is typically used by neurologists to treat nightmares. However, there is mounting evidence that it may be prophylactic in chronic daily headaches (though migraine is the more likely a type of headache for which it will be tested).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi, Neurologist
