Suggest Treatment For Non-gonococcal Urethritis In An Elderly Person

A 66yo male, I have consistent malodorous but clear penile discharge. My internist GP and I suspected non-gonorrheal urethritis, and he has treated with antibiotics once. He tested for STD s twice, before and after antibiotics - both tests negative. Yet the problem persists, with no other symptoms of any kind. I have long had rheumatoid arthritis, controlled well with methotrexate and a series of other drugs: Enbrel +; Humira +; Orencia - (changed quickly); now Xeljanz, since February. I am uncertain of onset of the discharge. Your thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Such urethritis can be fungal, bacterial or viral in nature. The penile discharge should be examined pathologically /culture & sensitivity test to know the pathological organism causing the infection & suitable antibiotic. Consultation of urologists would help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
