HI,

Herpes can sometimes cause frequent outbreaks. This more commonly occurs:

(1) When the virus has been recently acquired
(2) If the immune system is impaired or not working well in some way
(3) Fever or excess sun exposure
(4) If there is another infection present.

You should consider holding off any steroids because these reduce the immune system and may increase the frequency of outbreaks in some persons. If you recently got this infection then this is likely the reason for the frequent outbreaks, they should decrease with time.

If this is not the case, then you should also be screened for diabetes, infection, HIV and, very rarely, any cancers that may be affecting your immune response. This would require physical examination and blood tests as well.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
