Suggest Treatment For Numbness And Pain In Shin Area

i had a fall 3 weeks ago. No immediate pain and walked without problem all day. In evening left leg stiffened up and has been difficult to walk after getting up in morning. At first pain was in thigh and now this has gone but pain is in shin area and sometimes around knee. The shin area has become a bit numb. I have had x rays of hip and knee and no fracture seen. I am taking casually cerebix tablets which relieve pain and allow me to continue activities. My concern is the numbness and the morning pain not going away. I am 66 years old, very active, both hips replaced but x ray indicates no problem there both implants look solid and well formed. Knee shows wear but not enough to warrant a replacement. What do I do?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the numbness and pain in the shin area do indicate possible hematoma formation over the area following trauma and secondary effects of underlying nerve compression, which pause with numbness issue. My guidelines at present:
- Ice application over shin area 3 - 4 times a day for 5 minutes each
- Continue analgesic and anti inflammatory medications
- Discuss the need of antibiotics for better resolution of possible hematoma and soft tissue insult
- Avoid excess or prolong weight bearing
- Assisted physiotherapy by experts
- Supportive role of pregabalin type molecules in selected cases
- Control of blood sugar
Regular follow up with your ortho surgeon for best results.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
