Suggest Treatment For Oesophagitis And Shortness Of Breath For An 80-year-old

Hi, My 80yr old mother-in-law just spent 7 days in the hospital. She went in with shortness of breath. She is a breast cancer survivor. After many tests they said she has esophagitis (yeast infection of the esophagus), and they said old people get this . Is there such a thing?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your 80 year old Mother-in-law having breathlessness and got admitted for 8 days, told about yeast esophagitis. She is a cancer survivor.
Yes, the older people get yeast infection easily as the immunity is usually low in such people.
Associated problems like diabetes, cancer treatment and any infection can cause this.
Hence all the causes that reduce immunity should be found out.
As also the cause for shortness of breath.
Relevant blood tests, X-ray or CT scan of chest, Pulmonary function tests and such things that help to pinpoint the cause helps in proper diagnosis and management.
Specific treatment would have already been started for the esophageal yeast infection.
Simply saying old people get this is not sufficient, its cause and management is also needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
