Suggest Treatment For Pain And Irritation In The Abdomen

I have a mild but irritating pinching pain in my lower right abdominal area that is worse before I have to urinate. I am a 54 year old male. I drink diet MT Dew as I do not like coffee but it seems over the past week that the mt dew seems to bring on the pinching problem more than water. Could the caffeine be irritating the kidneys

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

This pain is probably originated from kidney and urinary tract. Caffeine can cause alterations in urine.

Caffeine is classified as a natural diuretic.
The primary reason why caffeine increases urination is that it increases blood pressure in kidneys. This property of caffeine causes more frequent urination.
The pain of renal colic develops suddenly and is often described by patients as “the worst pain they have ever felt”. Therefore many patients with renal colic can be managed in primary care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Enton Dore, General & Family Physician
