Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling In Cheek And Eye After Bee Sting

My daughter was stung by a bee on monday and is still experiencing pain and swelling which has spread from her hairline to her cheek and eye. She was seen by an NP at a walk-in clinic and was told that it could be shingles. Is it possible that a sting could cause a reaction that might start up the shingles virus ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There is a slight chance that a bee sting activates shingles. The symptoms are more related to an allergic reaction to the bee sting. I suggest using an antihistamine such as Benadryl daily. I also suggest using a steroid cream for local application such as Betametasone cream. If the swelling continues, she might need steroid shots.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
