Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling In Knee

My 16 year old daughter is having sever knee pain on the sides and behind the knee, with swelling. She said while playing basketball it doesn t hurt as much to jump and run as it does when she moves it side to side. Ice doesn t seem to help but heat does. It appears to be some fluid under her knee. Should I put her on crutches until she sees an orthopedic doctor?
