Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling On The Elbows

My husband saw his MD on Friday re: a swollen elbow with pain - which at the time presented like an infected bug/spider bite. The doctor used a syringe to remove fluid from the elbow and prescribed antibiotics. He has been icing and taking the antibiotics but all seems to be getting worse - swollen and painful. Any idea what the issue could be? Thank you - Jeanne Monahan

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
It sounds more like a bursitis, but the bug bite may have set up the infection. The bursa (a fluid filled sack around the elbow) can become inflamed and sometimes infected .Draining it may help and antibiotics also if it is infected. However, sometimes it just fills back up after it is drained. The first step is to make sure there is no more infection, then it may need to be drained again and a compression bandage applied to prevent re-accumulation of fluid.
