Hello,

Your father has been diagnosed with L4 L5 problem. He has been suggested surgery. You want him to get treated without surgery. To help relieve pain, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are usually tried first. For more severe pain, opioids, tramadol, and/or corticosteroids may be used.

Along with conservative treatment, physical therapy is also given. Exercise and physical therapy can be modified to specifically target pain stemming from L4-L5 and the lower back. Your father should get connected with a physical therapist. Improvement may take time. These therapies along with medicines help stabilize the back and keep the muscles and joints well-conditioned and give long-term relief.

However, if the back or leg symptoms do not improve with nonsurgical treatments then surgery may be considered. He should avoid repeated bending of the spine, he should not do high intensity exercises. Exercises should be done under the observation of a physical therapist. He is advised to quit smoking, reduce weight if overweight.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

Without examining your father or reviewing his medical records, I cannot provide a specific treatment plan. However, for pain related to L4-L5 disc problems, there are several non-surgical treatment options available, such as:
* Physical therapy: This can include exercises to improve mobility, stretches to alleviate pain, and strengthening exercises to improve back muscles' function.
* Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help manage mild to moderate pain. Prescription medicines may be needed for severe pain.
* Injections: Epidural steroid injections may be recommended to help reduce inflammation and pain in the lower back.
* Alternative therapies: Acupuncture, massage therapy, and chiropractic care may also help manage pain.

However, if these non-surgical treatments do not provide relief, surgery may be necessary. The cost of surgery varies depending on many factors, including the hospital, surgeon, and location.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
