Suggest Treatment For Pain From Knees To The Calves

I am 40 yr old active female. I walk/run at least 2 miles x3 days per week What causes my upper body to be at room temp and waist down to feel cooler. To the point that my bed sheets causes moderate to severe pain from my knees to my calf/shin area; always both legs with equal intensity. I have to cover myself with a sheet, comforter, 2 pillows, and a thermal blanket just to warm up my lower legs. also walking, stretching, running, hot baths; basically anything that increases my body temp relieves the pain. On the job, if the temp is 75 or below, I have to wrap my legs with a warm blanket, walk, or stretch. I noticed the pain is more intense after running/walking for a period of time. If I stop my walk/run and start working out t the gym, the pain is not as intense or excruciating. Also the difference in body temp decreases my libido. God forbid if the covers fall off my shoulders or if I lose my socks during sex= no orgasm. So, is this my thyroids, hormones, or a neuro issue? This has been going on approx 7yrs; I need to know what s causing this pain so I can deal with it effectively.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

After reviewing your history, I can come with a provisional diagnosis of intermittent claudication which is seen in chronic lower limb ischemia. This commonly occurs in individuals who have peripheral arterial disease and the pain typically presents in calf muscles after walking/ running a certain fixed distance called the claudication distance. If you were my patient, I would start with Doppler of both lower limbs to access the vascularity.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Tejas, General & Family Physician
